Is Trulicity (dulaglutide) the same as Ozempic (semaglutide)?
No, Trulicity® is not the same as Ozempic®, but there are some similarities. While both are in the same family or class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, their active ingredients are different. Trulicity contains dulaglutide as its GLP-1 receptor agonist while Ozempic contains semaglutide. Both medications are FDA-approved to treat type 2 diabetes and work to lower blood sugar levels by stimulating the release of insulin by the pancreas. A study comparing different doses of Trulicity and Ozempic showed that Ozempic was more effective in lowering A1c and weight than Trulicity. It is important to note that Ozempic’s active ingredient, semaglutide, is also the active ingredient of Wegovy®, a medication that is FDA-approved to treat obesity. Wegovy demonstrated in clinical trials an average of 15% body weight loss at one year in people taking the maximum dose in combination with a low calorie diet and increased physical activity.
