Is Contrave a controlled substance?

No, Contrave® is not a controlled substance as it has not been shown to have abuse potential. Due to telehealth practice laws, Form Health does not prescribe any controlled substances.

Contrave is an FDA-approved prescription medication used for chronic weight management in adults with overweight and obesity. Contrave is a combination of two medications, bupropion and naltrexone, that target areas of the brain to reduce hunger and cravings. However, naltrexone and bupropion have more use cases and effects than just altering your hunger cues. Outside of Contrave, Naltrexone is typically used to treat alcohol and opioid dependence, while bupropion is used for depression and as a smoking cessation aid. These are fairly commonly prescribed and widely studied medication compounds.

Of course, just because it is not a controlled substance does not mean that Contrave doesn’t carry any side effects. You should always talk to your healthcare provider about any concerns you may have regarding a new prescription medication before you start taking it.
