How much weight can you lose on Mounjaro (tirzepatide)?

The amount of weight one can lose while on a Mounjaro® prescription varies from person to person as weight loss is influenced by a variety of factors including nutrition, physical activity, other medications you may be taking, and more. Keep in mind, Mounjaro is FDA-approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes; however it may be prescribed off-label for weight loss in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30+ kg/m2 or 27+ kg/m2 with a weight related medical condition (e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol), if medically appropriate. One study in July 2022 found that patients taking the highest dose of Mounjaro (15 mg), lost 21% of their body weight after 72 weeks when combined with lifestyle changes which consisted of a low calorie diet and increased physical activity. If you are taking Mounjaro to lose weight and you have not lost at least 5% of your starting body weight after 3 months, you should reconsider whether this medication is right for you. Make sure to discuss this with your medical provider.
